A month dedicated to remembering those lost & to help bring awareness to those around us

Statistics from the National Alliance of Mental Illness show that suicide is the third leading cause of death between the ages of 15 to 24. It is the 12 leading cause of death for the overall population. In 2021, over 48,000 people died to suicide, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.
“There has to be more awareness between students,” said Student Health Education Coordinator Evelyn Pichardo. “We don't know how many people are on the brink as we speak, there are days when people aren't at their best.”
Pichardo added that students develop mental health issues from academic pressure, home life, and other factors. Ongoing mental health issues can lead to serious consequences if left untreated.
The Student Health and Wellness Center features in-person and online medical services. The in-person provider, Via Care, offers behavioral health care and counseling. Students can access these and other services after paying their $ 13-semester health fee. Monarchs seeking help can schedule an appointment at the Student Union Building.
Students looking for a virtual approach can use the TimelyCare app for online services. The app allows students to talk with a behavioral health provider who will refer them to a professional. This online feature allows students to seek help via video chat, phone, or through text. The service provides students with 12 sessions per calendar year with a professional.
The Health and Wellness Center will begin hosting biweekly wellness events starting Sept 25. Mindful Mondays will feature guided meditations and affirmations via Zoom. Wellness Wednesdays will offer meditation in green spaces throughout the campus. Pichardo hopes these events will give students a space to destress.
Pichardo mentioned that apart from the Health and Wellness Center students facing academic stress and issues have the Academic Resource Center.
“We have all these programs and resources to support you and we hope that you know they're here,” Pichardo said.
